Top country with patent applications for the coronavirus: USA

3 countries lead the way in the coronavirus patent applications

As the coronavirus pandemic -first identified in China and then spread all over the world- continues to impact our lives, there are continuous studies on previous coronavirus outbreaks or pandemics in the history of humanity. Stating that there was a sudden increase in the patent applications in 2002 particularly because of the SARS outbreak, Destek Patent reported that the countries with the highest numbers of coronavirus applications were the United States, China, and South Korea.

The coronavirus that has 7 known types so far shocked the whole world in 2002 because of the spread of the SARS-COV virus.

SARS-COV virus affected the patent applications to a serious extent

Kemal Yamankaradeniz, the Chief Executive Officer of Destek Patent shared his opinions about the patent applications map regarding the patent applications made in the area of coronavirus pandemics/outbreaks in the past:

"The first coronavirus-related patent application was made on October 30, 1972. The figures were stable until 2002, on which applications increased to 462 as the SARS-COV virus occurred. After 2002, the figures continued to increase until the MERS-COV virus occurred.

MERS-COV-related patent applications fell behind the SARS-COV-related applications

MERS-COV patents were less than SARS-COV patents. It is estimated that patent figures will incrementally increase in and after 2020.

The country with the highest application rate: United States of America

Expressing that 66% of the coronavirus-related patent applications were coming from three countries, Yamankaradeniz spoke as follows: "The United States hits the top with 581 applications among the countries that apply for patents. China ranks the second with 303 applications, and South Korea follows China with 127 patent applications and ranks the third country among the countries that apply for patents."

The country comes after South Korea: the Netherlands

Stating that the Netherlands was the country with the fourth-highest number of the applications made for the coronavirus patents, the CEO of Destek Patent summarized the patent applications of other countries that work on this field as follows:

"After the Netherlands, there comes Japan with 73 patent applications Following the countries indicated above, other foremost countries and their numbers of applications are as follows: United Kingdom: 60, France: 56, Russia: 52, Taiwan: 41, Germany: 38, Canada: 36, Belgium: 31, Spain: 27, Italy: 26, Singapore: 24, Austria: 19, and Switzerland: 18.

It would be an effective way to examine the patents in the field of medication studies regarding vaccine and treatment, and to patent the inventions in our country as well."
