“Investment in R&D is the most important indicator of economic growth.”

At the iftar dinner he organized, Destek Patent A.Ş. Chairman Kemal Yamankaradeniz mentioned the increase in trademark, patent, and industrial design applications filed domestically in 2016, 2017, and the first four months of 2018, and stated that the real sector in Türkiye is now investing more in R&D and innovation.

Yamankaradeniz emphasized that one of the most important indicators of national economic growth is the increase in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications. He said, “When we look at data from the first four months of 2016, 2017, and 2018, we see a significant increase in trademark, patent, and industrial design applications compared to previous years. The number of patent applications rose from 16,778 to 19,283, and the number of trademark registration applications from 107,176 to 121,108. The positive increase in the figures over the last two years is encouraging for our country. The increase in the number of trademark, patent, and industrial design applications demonstrates that our country, as it gains economic strength, has also significantly increased its R&D and innovation investments.”

The R&D Reform Package brings new support in many areas

Yamankaradeniz stated that the R&D Reform Package and Industrial Property Law, which have entered into force, have focused on industrialists, employees, and the benefits of R&D centers. He said, “With the R&D Reform Package, the government support industrialists receive is increasing. The minimum personnel required to establish an R&D center has now decreased across sectors. Additional incentives for personnel with a Basic Sciences degree to be employed in R&D centers have increased, as have R&D activities focused on high technology. In addition to these innovations, design activities have also been included in the scope of support.”

Companies are encouraged to engage in R&D

Yamankaradeniz, noting that companies will be incentivized to undertake joint projects, said, “Now, 50 percent of R&D and design expenditures undertaken through orders will be subject to an R&D discount, in favor of companies that place orders and the other 50 percent of those that receive orders. Furthermore, not only companies investing in R&D but also those that place research orders with R&D centers will benefit from these incentives. Furthermore, the minimum number of personnel required to establish an R&D center has been reduced from 30 to 15. The government will cover the gross minimum wage of salaries for 'Basic Sciences' graduates employed in R&D and design centers for two years. In other words, with the new reform package, the government is encouraging companies to engage in R&D in every way.”
