A video posted on social media about the coronavirus pandemic, which quickly impacted the entire world and brought life to a standstill, quickly generated significant buzz. The video, which claimed that the Pasteur Institute patented the novel coronavirus in 2003, raised many questions. Destek Patent clarified these concerns and stated that the claims that the novel coronavirus patent was granted in 2003 are false.

The claim made about the Covid-19 epidemic, which emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and spread throughout the world in a short time, had a great impact.

Destek Patent made a statement regarding the claims that the New Type Coronavirus was created by the Pasteur Institute and patented in 2003.

The patent received does not belong to Covid-19

Hakan Özcan, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of Destek Patent and Trademark and Patent Attorney, stated that the patent at the center of the allegations does not belong to the New Type Coronavirus and noted the following in his statements:

The patent in question is a priority granted in France dated December 2003. The invention relates to the use of proteins and peptides encoded by the genome of an isolated or purified strain of the coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The claims appear to seek protection for vaccines, diagnostic methods and kits, and biological and immunological complexes isolated from living organisms. It is understood from the references in the specification that the virus that caused the outbreak in November 2002 is mentioned. In addition to this patent, there are also numerous scientific articles and patent publications related to the coronavirus.

There are 7 types of coronavirus that can infect humans

Hakan Özcan, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of Destek Patent, Trademark and Patent Attorney, stated that there are many types of coronaviruses and seven known strains that can infect humans. He said, “These viruses, which generally cause the common cold in humans, can also cause loss of life. The SARS-CoV virus outbreak, which began in Guangdong Province, China, in 2002, has spread to 17 countries worldwide. The MERS-CoV virus outbreak, which began in Jordan/Saudi Arabia in 2012, has affected 27 countries worldwide. It is known that vaccine and drug research is ongoing for both types of epidemics.”

There is no known vaccine for the new type of coronavirus.

"The type of virus causing the current pandemic is coronavirus, and the disease it causes is COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019). In the medical literature, SARS-CoV-2 is known as 'Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2,'" said Destek Patent Board Chairman Advisor and Trademark and Patent Attorney Hakan Özcan, continuing his remarks as follows:

The Wuhan coronavirus is known to be a new strain, and there is currently no known vaccine for it. The genomic sequences of the coronavirus were released in January 2020, and due to the 18-month publication period, it seems unlikely that a patent has yet been issued on this subject. There have also been numerous statements in the press claiming that the patent in question is not related to the new coronavirus.

Global pandemics cause a significant increase in patent applications
