The Turkish Patent Institute (TPI) emerged victorious from the 56th WIPO General Assembly Meeting held in Geneva. The appointment of TPI as an international research and examination authority was approved by a majority vote. Commenting on the decision, Kemal Yamankaradeniz, Chairman of the Board of Destek Patent, said, “TPI is a special institution that has fostered the development of the field of intellectual and industrial property rights through the practices and ideas it has proposed, supported, and implemented, and has made significant contributions to Türkiye's development and transformation. With such a significant role, TPI has the potential to duly represent our country in the international arena.”

The TPI's process to become an international authority, which began with an application submitted to WIPO on March 15, 2016, concluded on October 6, 2016. Following the meeting, the TPI was recognized as an International Search and Examination Authority. Within the framework of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the TPI gained the authority to prepare search and examination reports valid in the countries party to the treaty.

Yamankaradeniz, addressing the TPI's status as an international authority and emphasizing its advantages, said, “It is a significant gain for the country's prestige for an organization like the TPI, which dominates its field, to achieve global authority. Of course, this brings financial benefits in addition to prestige. For example, from now on, the TPI will be able to prepare the research and examination reports for patent applications filed under the PCT by our citizens and established companies. This will generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual savings for our country and will also result in significant time savings, as patent search and examination processes will be expedited. The transformation of an organization operating in the field of intellectual and industrial property rights into an institution recognized as an authority in the global arena will also serve as an example for all public institutions operating in other areas. The TPI is a public regulatory institution that has adopted an active management style to develop its field. It has proven its existing potential with the right moves and steps. As well-established trademark and patent attorney companies in this field, we will always continue to support the TPI and all those who contribute to our country's economy and our sector.”

“The collaboration between the government, the business world and NGOs is important.”

Referring to the developments in the field of intellectual and industrial property rights, Destek Patent Chairman Kemal Yamankaradeniz said: Turkey is a productive country in the field of intellectual and industrial rights. This is known worldwide. However, one of our shortcomings is the protection of these rights. Consequently, our awareness is among our most important assets. Steps taken both by the government and with the support of the business world and NGOs are a testament to this. Steps such as our government's inclusion of the Patent Law on the parliamentary agenda as part of the 2017-2019 Medium Term Plan (MTP) and its expansion of the scope of the law regarding R&D incentives demonstrate our determination to achieve our goals, as our country is strengthening its intellectual capacity and its economic practices support this. The proper fulfillment of the duties of NGOs operating in the intellectual and industrial sectors not only strengthens the government's position in projects it is striving to implement but also raises awareness and motivates the business world. For our country to benefit more from this achievement, our industrialists must prioritize R&D activities, focus on producing higher value-added products, and file more patent applications. This strength “The continuation of the unity is essential for the interests of the country,” he said.
