Many people wonder what the ® symbol means. It's typically found next to a brand, logo, or slogan. So, what does the ® symbol mean, and why is it important? Here are the details...

What is the ® Sign and What Does It Mean?

The ® symbol typically represents a trademark registration. A trademark owner applies to the relevant authority to register other elements associated with the brand, such as a trademark, logo, or slogan.

Registering a trademark provides certain rights and protections to the trademark owner.

The ® symbol next to a registered trademark indicates that the trademark is registered and subject to legal protection. The right to use the ® symbol belongs to the trademark owner.

The ® symbol represents a trademark registered in the country in which it is used.

What is the difference between the ® and ™ symbols?

a. The ® mark may only be used in the case of a trademark registered in the relevant country.

b. ™ sign is used for trademarks whose registration process is not yet completed or for which no registration application has been made.

What are the advantages of the ® mark?

It demonstrates that a brand is legally protected, protects against trademark use violations, and prevents unauthorized use. It emphasizes to consumers that a brand is reliable and authentic, while also fostering consumer trust in the brand. It enhances the brand's reputation and value, providing a long-term competitive advantage.

What is Trademark Inquiry?

A trademark search is a research method used to determine whether a business or individual has the right to use a particular trademark. Those wishing to apply for a trademark conduct a trademark search to determine whether the relevant phrase/form, or a similar one, has already been registered by someone else.

You can also learn all the details about the trademark you want to register by searching for it on Destek Patent's website.

How to Register a Trademark?

An inquiry is made to determine whether the relevant phrase/form or a similar one has been registered by someone else in the trademark for which registration is requested.

This check includes whether an identical or similar trademark is registered. It's a crucial step to avoid any issues with the trademark application process. An application for registration is then submitted to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT). TURKPATENT reviews the application and, if deemed appropriate, publishes it in the Official Trademark Bulletin. If no objections are filed during the trademark's publication in the Official Bulletin, the trademark application is approved within approximately three months, and the trademark is registered by TURKPATENT.

However, as each country has different legal regulations regarding trademark registration and use, it is important for brand owners to comply with local legal requirements.

A trademark grants rights to the country(ies) in which it is registered. A trademark registered in Türkiye grants rights to its owner only within Türkiye.
