Turkey to Establish a Satellite Launching Facility

Minister of Science, Industry, and Technology Faruk Özlü said, "Turkey is a country that works to design and manufacture its own satellite, however, at the same time we are working on having a center from which to launch our satellites".

Özlü answered the questions of the Anadolu Agency regarding Turkey's "National Space Research Programme Roadmap".

Reminding that the update of the National Space Research Programme Roadmap under the coordination of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) was decided in the last meeting of the Supreme Council for Science and Technology (BYTK), Özlü said, "Commencing the establishment of the Turkish Space Agency that would oversee the National Space Research Programme Roadmap 2016-2023 and facilitate coordination between the players of the sector, and presenting the updated program in line with the decisions taken In the 30th meeting of the BYTK was decided".

Özlü stated that the 30th meeting of the Supreme Council for Science and Technology will be held in Ankara on 21 September under the chairship of prime minister Binali Yıldırım.

"With the establishment of Turkish Space Agency, all space-related activities will be carried out by one center"

Stating that the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications is coordinating the establishment of the Turkish Space Agency, Özlü said that a law draft on the matter is almost finalized. Özlü noted that after this draft becomes a law, a national space agency will have been founded in Turkey and all space-related activities will be carried out by this agency.

Reflecting on the fact that there are several institutions in Turkey such as TUBITAK, TURKSAT, and TAI that carry out space-related activities, Özlü said, "This space agency will enable Turkey to benefit from space more, just like the developed countries... Turkey is a country that works to design and manufacture its own satellite, however, at the same time we are working on having a center from which to launch our satellites. A centralized satellite launch center, if you will. So, with the establishment of this agency, all space-related activities will be carried out by one center. Which means that they will be more effectively taken care of".
