The New Year Started Promisingly for Turkey as the Country Moves forward in Intellectual Property Rights

Pointing out the applications in the field of Intellectual Property Rights in the first month of 2020, the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark institution (TURKPATENT) Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN pointed out that Turkey moved fast at the start of 2020 in terms of Intellectual Property Rights, and said "There were significant increases in Intellectual Property Rights applications from domestic patent to trademark, design and geographical indications compared to last year. While 351 domestic patent applications were filed in January last year, we received 437 domestic patent applications in the same month of this year with an increase of 24 percent." Stating that the institution received 752 foreign patent applications in January, ASAN added that they have received a total of 1189 patent applications in a month.

Pointing out that Turkey has seen a spike in trademark applications, ASAN said that the total number of trademark applications increased by 12 percent, and that the number of trademark applications increased from 120.008 in 2018 to 134.353 last year. Indicating that there is a 32,5% increase in January trademark applications, ASAN stated that the number of trademark applications, which was 8.235 in January 2019, increased to 10.911 in January this year. He said that the institution has received 11.854 trademark applications as of the end of January.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN said, "There were a total of 799 design applications in January 2019, while the number this year is 4.235 with a 26% increase. The number of utility model applications also reached 272, 268 of which were domestic. Thus, the number of applications in January of this year increased by 37 percent compared to the same month last year. In addition, 202 geographical indication applications were made last year. The number of registered geographical indications reached 468. He also mentioned that we have 467 geographical indications in progress as of the end of 2019.
