Technology that Detects Smoking Drivers by ITU

The use of artificial intelligence continues to show itself in new areas that are needed day by day.

In this context, Automotive Technologies Research and Development Center (OTAM) has carried out an important project. The initiative company named PIXSelect in ITU ARI Technopark and ITU OTAM have developed an artificial intelligence that detects drivers who talk on the phone, smoke, do not fasten seat belts or sleep while driving.

The project titled “Artificial Intelligence Monitoring Driver Behaviors” analyzes the behavior of the driver through the high-resolution camera placed in the rear-view mirror of the vehicle and reports it to the center. Artificial intelligence warns the center in real time as soon as it detects that the driver is acting in a way that endangers his/her own life and the safety of the traffic.

Making a statement about the project, Ekrem Özcan, İTÜ OTAM General Manager, said, "We are developing our Driver Behavior Monitoring with Artificial Intelligence project together with PIXSelect, one of the ITÜ ARI Technopark companies. As the data we share with artificial intelligence increases, the intelligence level increases and it can detect faster. With this technological solution that we conduct tests of it and use at OTAM, we are ready to meet the needs of other companies, from forklift users to drivers of vehicles in their fleets."

Kerem Yazıcı, General Manager of PIX Select, stated that, thanks to the relevant artificial intelligence, they can detect any behavior that may pose a risk from fatigue analysis of the drivers to smoking.
