Turkey is Gaining Importance as a Trade"Mark"

Faruk Özlü, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, mentioned that the number of trademark applications made in 2016 reached 107,176 in total, including 94,575 domestic ones. He said, "The rate of domestic applications was 87 percent last year. The increase in the number of domestic trademark applications is remarkable."

Minister Özlü made a remark regarding Turkish Patent and Trademark Office data.

Stating that there have been important developments in many areas, especially economy, in the last 14 years in Turkey, Özlü said that Intellectual Property Rights had its share from these developments as well. Özlü emphasized that, with the aim of increasing its technology capacity, Turkey focuses on intellectual and Intellectual property rights. He indicated that the awareness on this topic has increased recently.

Özlü mentioned that the number of trademark applications made in 2016 reached 107,176 in total, including 94,575 domestic ones. Taking attention to the increase in domestic trademark applications, Özlü stated that the rate of domestic trademark applications was 87 percent last year.
Özlü emphasized that the number of patent applications came close to 16,778, with 6,445 domestic and 10,33 foreign ones. He said, "Compared to last year, domestic patent applications increased by 17 percent and total patent applications increased by 20 percent. In general, domestic patent application rate has been 38,4."

"Record increase in utility model applications"

Özlü stated that, while the number of utility model applications increased to 3,534, including 3,457 domestic ones, the rate of domestic utility model applications was calculated as 98 percent.

Özlü mentioned that the number of design applications reached 40,363, with 39,294 domestic and 1,069 foreign ones. He emphasized that domestic design applications increased by 2 percent compared to last year, and domestic design application rate has been 97,4 percent.

Özlü mentioned that there has also been an important breakthrough in the number of registrations last year. He continued, "In 2016, the numbers of registrations made were a total of 97,085 in brands, 83,665 of which were domestic, a total of 11,074 in patents, 1,794 of which were domestic, a total of 2,441 in utility models, 2,347 of which were domestic, a total of 42,746 in industrial designs, 41,391 of which were domestic."

Özlü took attention to the facts that, compared to last year, the number of domestic trademark registrations increased by 19,3 percent and the number of total trademark registrations rose by 17 percent. He also stated that, compared to last year, the number of domestic patent registrations increased by 4 percent and the number of total patent registrations rose by 10 percent.
