A geographical sign covers the products that was produced in an area with certain borders or according to the criteria which are made inside these borders. Thus, stating that every province of our country has a certain potential, Kemal Yamankaradeniz, the Chief Executive Officer of Destek Patent spoke as follows: "In recent years, people indeed raised their awareness for geographical sign registration. To ensure the protection of local products, people may register their geographical signs to avoid the production of different products in the name of the product. In that case, in particular, chambers of commerce and industry should take action to initiate the protection of the products produced in their locale. One of the registered geographical signs is Milas zeytinyağı (Milas Olive oil). We recently completed the registration process of the geographical sign process of Milas zeytinyağı (Milas Olive Oil) of which the application was made by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the City of Mugla (located in southwestern Turkey) on the 6th month of 2014. With that registration, Destek Patent managed to register its 5th geographical sign".

Saying that our 193rd registration was 'Milas zeytinyağı' (Milas olive oil), Yamankaradeniz expressed his opinions as follows: "With Milas olive oil, we managed to obtain the number of 193 for our products with a registered geographical sign, with the increase of 3.52% from the beginning of the year. After Milas Halısı (Milas Carpet) and Bodrum Mandalinası (Bodrum Tangerine), Milas Zeytinyağı (Milas Olive Oil) was registered as a geographical sign, making the city of Mugla become a city with three products with a registered geographical sign. There are 193 products of which geographical signs were registered across Turkey. Among these 193 products, there were only three regions that had the registration of geographical sign patent. With Milas zeytinyağı (Milas olive oil) the number of the registered olive oils increased to four."

"Product audit activities should be increased as well as the registration"

Stating that the product registration activities are not good enough, Yamankaradeniz spoke as follows: "The municipalities or chambers of commerce or industry should also audit the product. In order for a geographical sign to provide economic benefits to those who registered it, the inspection mechanism must work properly. It won't be enough if the registration made abroad. If we really have confidence in our product, we should have it registered on an international scale as well. The number of products with registered geographical sign in the TPE (Turkish Patent Institute) could not still reach 200. The number of our registrations is low. Given the fact that we have a land that has excellent local flavors and products, according to studies, we approximately have 2.500 products that can be registered. We should realize how precious the products we have and turn them into commercial values."
