The First Thermometer

The thermometer we use today to measure temperature was invented by the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei in 1592. Galileo’s thermometer was a glass bulb filled with air. The bulb was connected to a glass tube immersed in colored liquid. As the air heated, it would expand and move the liquid up. The first example of a modern thermometer was produced in Italy in 1654. This thermometer was a glass bulb filled with water and connected to a thin glass tube. The German scientist Gabriel Fahrenheit developed the thermometer by using mercury as the liquid instead of water.
